After getting four standard "Kink Free" hoses from Ace Hardware, all of which kinked from their first use, I gave up on the standard type of hose, which is made of a pretty stiff material. I would always get into a situation where the hose would kink up upon itself and cut off the water flow. Then I would have to go back and manually unkink the hose, not always easy to do because of the stiffness of the standard hose material. Once the hose kinked in a spot, it was likely to kink again in the same spot, as a weakness had been permanently made at that spot, once kinked.I did see some disappointing reviews here on the green Pocket Hose (15 metre), but when I saw that it was available, I decided to give it a try. After all, the Ace hoses were impossible. I bought one for the front yard and one for the back yard, and did my usual hand-watering. I was initially delighted!
First of all, the weight of the hose is trivial compared to a standard hose, which can get a little tiring to lug around. As the product description indicates, the compacted hose filled with water to its full length. When I turned off the water, the hose contracted to a more compact form. True, it didn't compact back to the original compacted size, but to about a quarter of its full length, so that it could be stored easily below the water spigot.
The instructions indicate that in the summer the hose should be stored in the shade, and in the winter, inside, as in a garage. I don't know how important that really is. I'm just going to leave my Pocket Hoses outside under the spigot. But, then, I live in a mild climate. If you're regularly getting hot, direct sunlight or sub-freezing temperatures, the proper storage could markedly increase the life of the Pocket Hose.
One benefit that I did notice: the water flow was noticeably increased through the Pocket Hose as compared to the standard Ace hoses that I had previously used. I would attribute that probably to the fact that the standard hose is so stiff that it does not expand, whereas the Pocket Hose readily expands and contracts to reflect the actual water flow.
Unfortunately, my delight abated when, within weeks, I experienced two defective hoses. One leaked badly after a few weeks' use, and another exploded like a balloon. The junction of the hose material with the plastic on the faucet end is badly manufactured, and the hose comes apart there.
Since the 15-metre length was just a bit short for my use, I had been pulling the hose to reach. Maybe this weakened an already-weak connector. So I decided to try this hose, the blue Xhose (22.5 metres). So far, this hose material seems more substantial. We'll see whether the junction holds up.
