I bought this to replace an 11-year old Rain Bird ESP-8Si that was no longer working. Being another Rain Bird product, I was relieved to find that my old wiring would plug directly into the new controller without any changes. This made installation mindless and simple. I labeled the zone controller wires for my 8 zones, unplugged them from the ESP-8Si, removed it, mounted the Smart Station, and then reattached the 8 zone wires. Everything worked perfectly from there.

Once I had swapped in the controller, the only extra installation work I had to do was mount the remote weather sensor unit to my fence and run the line into the controller. Once plugged in, I started seeing humidity readings on the controller. When it rains, the sensor seems to detect this within 2-3 hours. It will then stay in "rain detect" state for up to a few days until the sensor dries out. Until the rain detection expires, it will not water your lawn. I love this feature!

We've had some sub-40 degree (F) weather recently and, as advertised, the smart station did not water my yard when the temps dropped below 40.

The humidity readings are consistently too low for my area. I live in Houston, Texas and we often have high humidity (as high as 100%). The highest I've seen on the Smart Station is a reading of 63% (when the weather channel was reporting 100% humidity AND it was pouring rain). When not raining, the highest humidity reading I've seen is 58% (when weather channel was reporting 100% humidity).

It took me a bit to rethink my lawn's schedule in the context of the new "smart" adaptive functionality of the new Rain Bird, but once done, I'm confident it will work better than my old unit. I love the seasonal adjustment that reduces watering in the winter. I used to "manually" do this in the past. Now I can just forget about it and let the Rain Bird smart station do all the thinking.

Overall, this is a nice and easy upgrade. If you are somewhat careful with the wires, even someone with little technical skill can remove an old rain bird unit and hook up this one.
