I tried a 50 watt heater for my concrete bird bath. Worked okay in a mild winter but barely kept any water open in a very cold winter. Decided to give this one a try. On a 7 degree morning the bird bath was ice free and the water was 45 degrees. The instructions say not to use an extension cord but the caution should be use the proper cord. The manufacturer confirmed I would have no problem with the 100 foot, 16 guage, cord I use. I also worried about being away for over a week. The bird bath usually needs water every couple days. I wrote the manufacturer and they called me to discuss my concerns. If the bird bath goes dry the heater will continue to work just fine but will be heating the air instead of water. Of course, if we have rain or snow while I'm gone, the bird bath refills and the heater keeps it ice free. I've been away once for a week and the bird bath went dry. No rain or snow while I was gone. Filled the bird bath when I returned and the heater was fine. No damage from running dry.
250 watts adds quite a bit to the electric bill but the birds and squirrels are happy to have a source of water on even the coldest days. And my bird feeders are always crowded.
