Orbit 57096 Super-6 Controller with Remote Review

Summary:
Overall the model 57096 is a competent controller at a good price especially considering the included remote, but the price point does come with compromises as I will explain:

Positives:
1. I've used Orbit in the past and have controllers that have lasted many years. I've purchased multiple high-end, much more expensive Rainbird units that never had lasted more than 2 years.
2. The remote is a very nice feature especially given the price charged for the unit. Orbit indicates the remote will work up to about 200 feet from the controller. They suggest installing the controller as high on the wall as possible for best reception. At a mounting height of about 6.5 feet on a garage with no major obstacles in the way and a fresh 9-volt battery, a distance of 200 feet is about correct with the signal having to go through the garage wall.
3. The overall programing is slightly different than many other controllers I've used, but generally easy once you remember its method.
4. Each of the two programs has four watering start times that should suffice for 90%+ of users.
5. Program setting are retained in case of power failure independent of a battery (they are saved in non-volatile memory).
6. Date and time are protected against power failure per two AA batteries.
7. A spare system fuse is provided.
8. You can set valve run times to the minute. Many high-end units only allow you to set valve start run at 10 minute intervals once you go beyond an hour.
9. You can set program start times to the minute. Many high-end units only allow you to set program start times at 15 minute internals.
10. Mounting the unit on the wall was very easy (less than 5 minutes). There have been complaints about an included template that's incorrect. My unit did not come with a template. Just determine where you want to install the screw for the "keyhole", Do this, then place the unit on the wall held-up by the keyhole screw then use a level to straighten the controller or just eyeball it, then mark the other two mounting holes with a pencil.

Compromises c/o the price (in general order of annoyance):
1. The LCD display is small (although it is advertised as "large") as well as a small control dial and small text labeling around it. At a mounting height of 6.5 feet, it's very hard to read the control dial text and LCD without excellent light or a flashlight.
2. You have to replace the batteries about once a year per the manual. However, there's no low battery warning light for the controller or remote. Weak batteries in the controller can cause the date and time to be lost, again per the manual. What is considered a "weak" battery is not defined so this is a bit of a shot in the dark when you should replace the batteries.
3. Program "A" allows you to only set specific days of the week (Mon, Tue, Wed, etc). Program "B" only allows you to set odd/even or specific day interval from 1 to 28. Most controllers provide a choice of all these functions on each program.
4. The unit has only two programs, most units in this price range have 3 or 4 (but then there's no remote, so it's a trade-off).
5. You have to remember to press the "enter" button after you enter valve run times, program start times, etc or the unit does not save them. It's very easy to forget to do this as I've never seen a controller require this and I've used many different controllers over the last 15 years. In some cases, if you press "enter", which would see logical, the value is erased and you have to start over.
6. Most controllers have a means to attach PVC pipe or similar where the wires attach to the controller. This unit does not in any manner. I believe would be a very inexpensive to add. I looks like an oversight on Orbit's part (I wonder if they had any actual average customer's install it before they started selling it).
7. Although the control is very nice, you cannot set a specific time for a valve to run, you are give pre-set times of 2, 10, 30, or 60 minutes.
8. Batteries are required, not included (one 9-volt and two AA), and ust be replaced yearly or so as noted earlier.
9. Like the rest of the various important parts of the unit (except the remote), the size of the screws are very small that are used to tighten down the power and valve wiring. It's very easy to strip the little screw heads if you are not careful.
10. The maximum time you can run a value is 99 minutes. For some very slow flow rate drip systems, this could be an issue.
