I have an extensive drip irrigation system and use several water timers, so I had a chance to compare them side by side.My DIG timer has been in operation for 3 years (this is the fourth summer), Orbit timer has been in operation for 1 year (this is the second summer).
I did not realize some of the limitation of the Orbit timer from reading the package, which I am detailing below.
I liked:
1. Simple to use
2. Has manual override
3. Big easy to see digital read out and dial
4. Works on two AA batteries, the batteries are easy to change
I don't like:
1. Programming mode is very limited. The minimum time period you can set it up for is every 6 hours. It has to be exactly 6 hours apart. My first timer gives me full control over when the waterings occur. For example, I do not want to water in the middle of the night as might promote root rot. But I do want to water more frequently during the day in the middle of hot summer. This timer does not give that type of control.
2. Uses batteries at a very fast clip. I normally use rechargeable batteries, but the timer only ran for 2 weeks on rechargeable. This was totally unexpected, and I only noticed because my flowers became wilted. I switched to regular batteries, and those lasted about 6 week. So I began changing them once a month to avoid problems. I went through 2 sets of rechargeable, and 3 sets of regular batteries last summer. When the batteries dies, the time still displays time for a short period but stops watering, so you really need to keep an eye on it. I test it every now and then by turning on manual override. If it works the battery is still working, if it does not it needs a new battery.
With the exception of the two short comings described above the timer works fine.
The DIG timer, by comparison, ran on one set of chargeable 9V batteries for each of three summers I used it. Most significly for me it can handle a very complex watering schedule - I can control how often the waterings occurs (how far apart, which days of the week, how long the watering lasts). This is particularly important for a drip irrigation system. If you are watering your lawn once a day this capability is not important.
The big down side to the DIG timer is how difficult it is to change the battery when the timer is already installed. The battery compartment is located on the bottom of the timer, and you need to do work on it upside down if the timer is already attached to the hose. I had to use a mirror to figure out what I was doing as the battery compartment can become not water proof if you do it incorrectly. I have not had any water leaks in my 3 years of use, but closing mechanism is finicky even if you don't do it upside down. Good thing that it is not a power hog and I only need to do it once a year.
If you plan to water once a day and don't mind changing batteries often Orbit is a fine timer. If you wanted a more complex watering schedule it is not the best option.
