This pump has only one moving part---a diaphram that vibrates and creates an INCREDIBLE amount of air flow. The only other air pumps that can approach this much air production---to run huge, deep airstones---are piston pumps which can be difficult and expensive to maintain. They also have a risk of oil contamination of air in poorly designed models. Every couple of years a new diapram kit can be used to refurbish this pump at home. I use six wide 8" air stones made for ponds and run them at 5-ft. deep in my koi pond. My Koi always enjoy the maximum air saturation levels possible in their water and are comfortable in our "desert" area on the hottest days. The pump is expensive but durable and made with real quality control. It is well worth the price. It is replacing one that I used outdoors (with a lattice-vented plastic laundry basket turned upside down to protect it) for about 10-years.
