Pressure Filter (1000 Gallon w UVC) Review

This filter started out gangbusters and cleared up a major infestation of suspended algae in a 1000 gallon hot tub-turned koi pond almost overnight. I am a tiny bit annoyed at the frequency with which it needs to be rinsed in order to maintain a strong outflow, but that is as much a function of the amount of detritus that tends to fall into the pond as anything. I have this filter mounted on the side of my pond and submerged approximately half in the water and half out. I attached a coarse pre-filter to the submersible pump running this UV filter, hoping to reduce the need for cleaning but it doesn't seem to help much. I generally end up having to rinse built-up, coarse crud off the filter media about once every 4-6 weeks. Other than that complaint, This is a great filter and after about 5-6 months, still keeps the water esentially suspended-algae-free.

August 2012 update: After a little over a year of operation, just wanted to update folks on long-term performance of this filter and its components: The UV bulb went out at about the 9 month mark. It took me a few weeks to get around to contacting the manufacturer to see if the warranty will hold up. I am at the halfway mark of a supposed 2 yr warranty on product and components to include (one would think) the UV bulb. I have not yet received a response so I contacted the seller to see if they could help with contacting the company. The seller's response was as follows: "We stopped carrying the Alpine pumps line. Not sure where to send you?? We really appreciate your Business! Thank You! Trevor, FountainEmporium.com"

Gee, Thanks- It's also been troublesome to track down where to even get a replacement bulb and when I did, I am frustrated to find out the bulb alone goes for about $30. The sponge filter media (coarse and fine) have held up, over a year of heavy duty, remarkably well but should have been replaced at about the 9 month mark. The plastic media are just fine and wouldn't need replacing, however I am opting to change it out and go with a ceramic product - or simply add the new media to the plastic - because I'm not overly impressed with the bacteria growth on the slick "basketballs" that come with the product. Will post another update concerning the warranty inquiry...
