Nelson Three-Arm Square Pattern Spray Whirling Sprinkler with Metal Wheel Base 50231 Review

Some time ago I needed a couple sprinklers, one for the front yard and one for the back. I bought two of these Nelson Metal whirling sprinklers. Frankly, I haven't been very satisfied with this product. They seemed to work rather well at first. Then a little bit of corrosion of the metal parts set in. The whirling thingy became reluctant to whirl. I tried a number of cures, including a dose of WD-40. It helped. However, in order to properly whirl, the water now has to be fully on otherwise it just won't work. Next, I noticed that the sprinkler leaks badly around the hose junction and around the base of the whirler. Let's face it, these sprinklers are just little pieces of junk. I still use mine, but I feel somewhat annoyed every time. If you're looking for a sprinkler, you could probably find a better one.

Gilmour 876S Square Pattern Spot Sprinkler Review

This is a very simple sprinkler. You control it by increase or decrease water pressure by how wide you open the spigot of water to which the hose is attached. How much of the area is covered depends on how strong your water pressure is at its max. The biggest area I can get is about 10 feet square. And, of course, anything less is obtained by just by turning down the water flow.

This sprinkler works well for spot watering. I have two small areas in the front lawn that I need to water, so I move the sprinkler a few times to get the entire area covered.

Since it has no moving parts this is going to outlast all my other rotation and oscillating sprinklers that I use in the back yard. The only down side of this sprinkler that it is very light, so if the hose does not want to lay flat (which is often the case) this sprinkler will not stay flat, it cannot fight what the hose wants to do. There is a little loop of metal at the very tip which can be used to pin the sprinkler to the ground. If you push a nail through the hole and into the ground at a slight angle it will provide some resistance to the twist from the hose.

I bought a square and circle of this sprinkler. Frankly, it appears to me that they water the same shape, mostly controlled by how the wind blows. I am attaching a photo of this sprinkler next to a pen, so you can see the relative size of it.

This is a good economical solution for a small area.

This is one of the best hose nozzles I've used. It goes from a fine mist spray to a tight spray that is easily superior to any handle-design hose nozzle I've used. It's also far more comfortable and easy to use. The twisting head moves with ease and is a joy to use. The ergonomics are also superior. You can't go wrong with this for $10. I will probably get another one for my back yard.

Found this device locally as well. Both Walmart (Nelson) and Home Depot (Gilmour) have this for much less than Amazon.

This device does eight patterns

1.) soft "shower" circle
2.) full circle spray
3.) half circle spray
4.) quarter circle spray
5.) a wierd "triangle" spray pattern
6.) full square spray
7.) half square spray
8.) "rectangle" pattern (really shoots two jets of water in opposite directions)

The good: (not much)
-The heavy metal base is nice and helps to anchor the device down.

The bad:
-The connection leaks. No, it's not the gasket. It leaks at the hose side. It also leaks from the collar (on the female connection side).
-The patterns suck. The spray from the spray settings produce either a very fine mist (which increases evaporative losses and wastes water) or a much harder "flat" jet (which is damaging to delicate flowers) depending on incoming water pressure. The soft "rain shower" setting produces a small (maybe 5-6 foot diameter?) circle that floods the bed you're watering quickly.

This item does what it advertises. It gets wet and turns off your irrigation system until it dries out. You will not get much more than that at this price point.

Be aware that the "10-year battery" lasts nowhere close to 10 years. This gets a star docked. If the battery dies take the transmitter and receiver to a Hunter dealer (locate one on Hunter's website) near you and do a warranty swap. I just swapped mine which died at just under three years old. No fuss, no muss and best of all I have a brand new unit with a brand new five year warranty for no cost.
