The barley straw pellets come in a tall white plastic bucket, the pellet diameter is 1/8 inch compared to 1/4 inch for the Laguna brand. The pellets do work to control algae growth in fish pond. You put the pellets into a mesh bag and simply put it into the pond. I used the mesh bag that came with the 2.5 lb Laguna barley straw pellet that I had bought at a garden store. Because the pellets are hard to find at stores and because they do work, hence the decision to buy them on-line. I don't think the pellet diameter makes a difference but perhaps the smaller one offers more surface area although the pellets do swell and eventually morph into saw dust like consistency when spent after a useful life of about three months.
