I bought two of these to put in the stream of my 15,000 gallon pond (which I didn't want to freeze solid because of tadpoles, etc. living there), and within about 30 seconds, these trip the 20 amp GFCI outlets. I've tried them in other GFCIs and the same thing happens. They work fine if you plug into a regular outlet, but that would be stupid.

For keeping a hole in your ice a "pond air pump" works great. I've used one for years-- very cheap and reliable. I now keep one of my skimmer pumps running year round so that the stream doesn't freeze solid. I'm sure that works better than a deicer anyway, but it is more costly.
