I'm writing this to provide a different perspective from the first reviewer that gave it one star.

I've purchased dozens of home automation gadgets from X10 for 15-20 years. I used to get their
re-branded devices from Radio Shack, which doesn't sell them any more to my knowledge.

I use their lamp modules, appliance modules, mini timer, socket rocket, remote control, motion
sensors, remote chime, etc. You can turn things off/on wirelessly by pushing a button, or based
on motion, or change in brightness (ex. day-to-night).

These things work very well. OK, a few of the modules went bad over the years, but you can get them
on sale from X10 very cheaply. And they have sale after sale after sale. Their web site won't give
you much confidence because they look like pages out of the National Enquirer. But their stuff works.

Here're some of my uses for their stuff over the years:
- turn the lights on in the house when the garage door opens
- have the chime go off if there's motion in the garage (have I left the garage door open?)
- turn the porch lights on automatically when it gets dark and turn them off in the morning
- turn lights/radio on in the house when someone is approaching the front door
- turn the coffee maker on by pushing a button next to the bed (not based on time, but when I actually get up)
- have the chime go off if there's any motion in the basement at night (only)
- turn on lights in the house in the morning (if it's dark) as we walk past motion sensors

When I walk past a motion sensor, depending on the time of day, a light goes on. I programmed these sensors to
turn lights off after some number of minutes. Different sensors have different turn off times, based on
where they're located. At night I turn all the lights off in the house using a remote control next to my bed.

All of the above is trivial if you can read and follow simple instructions.
