Initially this seemed like a great way to use the water in our new rain barrel in a slow, soaking process. Mine is in the trash, after about 6 months of very light use. I only used it to wash the car, which it was good for, because I liked the sheeting action (due to the large size) to rinse the car. Its a great idea, but it is made in China, and the ball valve inside is plastic, and the operating mechanism is probably plastic also. In trash because valve quit closing all the way and would leak by. Get a Dramm brand brass valve, its Made in the USA and works great, and has a better little lever to open and close the valve.

Gardena 2656 Wall Mount Swivel Automatic Retractable Garden Hose Reel With 66-Foot Hose, Garden Spray Nozzle With Quick Connect, And Quick Connect Fittings Review

This is quite an impressive piece of equipment compared to the inexpensive manual wind-up hose reels I've used in the past. It addresses three "needs improvement" complaints I've harbored, but leaves a fourth.

1. The spring loaded wind-up works, it works well, and eliminates the sometimes awkward manual hand cranking.
2. The automatic guide zig-zags back and forth across the opening of the box, ensuring the hose coils evenly across the reel.
3. The whole hose box swivels -- 180� if wall mounted, and potentially 360� if floor/patio mounted -- which means spooling out and re-coiling isn't optimized in only a single direction, which in the case of the manual reels I've used previously, was always aligned with the side of the house.

4. (and this is the negative that wasn't addressed) I still find it necessary to have a rag or shop towel on hand to help guide the hose back into the box while simultaneously wiping the accumulated mud/muck/grime that's collected from the outside surface of the hose, but I really see no way around this.

The 60+ foot length is generous, and with my mounting location strategically chosen, I can reach all of the backyard and side walkway (though I ran 40' new feet of buried PVC to make this location a possibility).

The mounting instructions seem like overkill, but they include a tip that if the mounting bracket is mounted at a 5� tilt on the wall, the box will naturally swing in close to the wall when stored. Quite nice for the location I've chosen to make this otherwise large, brightly colored box just a bit more inconspicuous.

The reel assembly is not very heavy, but it is large and bulky. It has a built in carrying handle and simply lifts off the mounting post to store it away (the instructions recommend it be stored indoors during winter). Of course, this makes the whole contraption prone to theft by a green-thumbed ne'er-do-well, and though provisions are included for a theft-deterrent bracket, some consideration should be given to keeping this out-of-sight if you feel this may be a tempting target.

Included are three quick-disconnect mounting brackets, which all work well enough, but are made of plastic. The 3/4" NPT copper threads (not a conventional hose bib thread) that I screwed mine on to drips. This is normally something I can easily solve with teflon tape with metal hose fitting, but the plastic can't be tightened sufficiently without risking breakage or thread stripping. Instead I used Nelson Hose Fitting for 3/4" male NPT, which, technically, was the right way to make this connection. I'll likely be replacing the Gardena's plastic fittings with brass quick disconnect garden hose fittings that have held up to years and years of trouble-free service.

Another piece I'm not overly thrilled with is the included sprayer nozzle, which simply feels a bit lightweight and cheap, and has an awkward trigger lock and spray intensity adjustment. I have large hands, and think I'd need to be a few glove sizes larger to make this sprayer comfortable to operate. Locking the triger "on" does no good since holding this nozzle in the expected manner simply unlocks it (it's a whole-hand/four finger trigger, not an index finger only type). However, the spray pattern does adjust from a wide mist all the way down to a focused stream, so from purely a usage perspective, it gets the job done. The included literature lists this as the "Plus" model; the non-Plus model wouldn't have included the sprayer attachment (but I don't see that model listed on Amazon).

As other reviewers have pointed out, this is a skinny 1/2" hose, not a more common 5/8" size. That 1/8" difference means that, at 60 feet, the theoretical flow rate of this hose may only be 11 gallons per minute, versus 21 gallons per minute for a 5/8" hose (at about 60 PSI, according to an online water flow calculator I found). But that doesn't account for the nozzle. So I put it to the "5 gallon bucket test," and here's what I found, versus a similar length of 5/8" hose and the garden sprayers set to the "stream / Power Rinse" positions.

1/2" hose, no sprayer: 5 gallons in 43 seconds (7.0 gallons per minute)
5/8" hose, no sprayer: 5 gallons in 21 seconds (14.2 gallons per minute)
1/2" hose, sprayer on "stream": 5 gallons in 70 seconds (4.3 gallons per minute)
5/8" hose, sprayer on "power rinse": 5 gallons in 66 seconds (4.5 gallons per minute)

So you can see that while the max flow rate is half that without a sprayer attached to the hose end, the sprayer ultimately determines how much water is coming from the hose, and negates any difference. From what I've observed, for watering the garden or hosing down the patio, the 1/2" hose is fine. For filling buckets, or supplying a power washer, or using a really high volume pressure washer hose nozzle, this smaller diameter would be a limiting factor.

One tip / observation: Mine has "plugged up" twice to where it wouldn't spray -- I'm pretty sure because I connected it to a new PVC + copper water line that I neglected to flush out, so I had some solder flux and maybe PVC shavings that got inside the hose. But with the provided quick-connect couplings, it was very easy to disconnect the sprayer nozzle, and connect the long hose to the the garden spigot, flushing free any accumulated debris with reverse water flow. I suspect that, over time, normal sediment accumulation might cause a similar stoppage, and if so, this proves to be a fairly simple way to fix it.

Amazon's customer service was great, they sent a replacement item the next day hoping perhaps I received the wrong item. But the 2nd item had the same contents as the first.

I'm sure the pieces that were sent do work just fine, but beware that you will not be receiving the product as it's described.

Element ELSP38025 3/8-Inch by 25-Feet Soakerpro hose, Black Review

Bought this product elsewhere on sale. Didn't want to use an easy-to-rip, easy-to-crack plastic soaker so tried this recycled rubber SoakerPRO. Disappointed that it didn't work right out of the package. The coupling leaked like a sieve even on very low water pressure. The blue water restrictor disk in the coupling (attaches to your garden hose) did not have a washer in the coupler housing so I took an old water nozzle rubber washer and placed it over the blue disk, attached the garden hose again, and the leaking miraculously stopped. Don't know why the manufacturer doesn't provide a washer to give you the option to use it if you need it. The blue disk in the photo doesn't show a washer at all and it is really necessary. But, once the leak was corrected, the hose works as advertised, uniformly irrigates, is 65% recycled rubber (tires?), and is lead-free. 25 feet works fine in our 9x4-foot raised vegetable garden bed. All Colorite hoses have lifetime warranties but this Colorite Element SoakerPRO only has a 7-year warranty if you keep the receipt and keep the UPC bar code packaging (a half-sheet of paper twist-tied to the rolled-up hose).

Rain Bird 1ZEHTMR Electronic Hose End Timer Review

I bought two of these on sale at Lowe's for about $43 each and they are pretty fantastic. They replaced some junky $30 Orbit controllers that leaked a continual stream through the plastic when the sprinklers weren't on.

This Rain Bird unit is digital and extremely easy to use. It also feels like it was solidly built. You don't need the instructions at all to program the thing. Just read the labels on the knob, engage the setting of your choice, and the digital display will give you very intuitive, common sense readouts.

When installing, I recommend putting a few wraps of plumbers tape (I think that's what it's called) on the male end of the pipes you're working with so that you don't get any leaks once the controller is screwed on. I had a great deal of difficulty getting just barely more than one single rotation on the device when screwing into the PVC that heads into the ground and feeds my sprinklers. This process was made easier by using the plumbers tape on the second install of this device, and like I said, it will dramatically reduce the likelihood of leaks.

The device is just so easy to use and so far has been completely reliable. The button to manually turn on a session of watering "right now" is so easy to find and operate. The digital screen simply asks you the duration that you'd like to have the sprinklers on in this "manual override." Once that is selected (default is 10 minutes), the water session will begin, continue for the selected amount of time, shut off, and not recur (since it is just a manual way to turn on the sprinklers). After getting the scheduling of your system all set up so that the Auto mode can take control of things, it's nice to be able to manually test and adjust your sprinklers' watering pattern with this really convenient "water now" button.
